Police seek 15 days to detain Juja CDF chair, two others over MP Koimburi abduction

A Nairobi court is expected to hear a miscellaneous application filed by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), which is seeking 15 days to detain suspects linked to the alleged abduction of Juja MP George Koimburi.
The suspects are Juja Constituency Development Fund (CDF) Chairman, Peter Kiratu Mbaru, David Macharia Gatana and Cirus Kieru Muhia.

Police claim that MP Koimburi was abducted from Full Gospel Ebenezer Church in Mugutha by the three respondents: Mbaru, Gatana and Muhia, who are reportedly his close associates.
However, police say the motive behind the alleged abduction remains unknown.
The DCI argues that investigations are still ongoing, and releasing the suspects at this stage could jeopardise the process, particularly as the MP is yet to record his official statement.
According to court documents, the allegations have caused panic, fear, and sharp political divisions across the country and within the affected constituency, which is cosmopolitan in nature. This is said to pose a threat to national peace and stability.
It is further claimed that Koimburi remains critically ill, according to close friends and family. The outcome of his medical condition remains uncertain.

This political dynamic has reportedly fuelled intense public reaction that could escalate into serious unrest, according to the DCI who emphasised that kidnapping is a serious offence under the Penal Code.
Preliminary investigations also suggest that, after reportedly evading arrest on May 23, 2025, the MP later returned safely to his home in Mugutha.
This was allegedly confirmed by the first respondent, Mbaru, who visited him and was informed that the MP intended to seek legal redress to recover his impounded vehicle from the police.
Police further state that they require more time to record witness statements and visit the crime scene.
The three suspects are expected to appear before Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina.
